Man-in-the-Middle: Attack & Mitigation¶
This pair of examples demonstrates the same threat twice: first with no Zero Trust controls in place, then again with the full stack — identity, certificates, TLS-style handshake, encryption, and policy enforcement — switched on.
| Description | |
|---|---|
Attack — mitm-attack.cc |
A sensor sends a plaintext UDP message believing it's talking directly to the gateway. In reality the packet is routed through an on-path MITM node, which reads and forwards the (unprotected) payload to the real gateway. |
Mitigation — mitm-mitigation.cc |
The sensor now performs a Zero Trust handshake and policy check before sending anything, encrypts its payload, and the gateway decrypts and validates the certificate and policy authorization before accepting it — so an interposed node only ever sees ciphertext it cannot use. |
Components used in the mitigation: Certificate Authority & Certificate-Based Policy, Policy Engine, TLS Handshake, Encryption Utilities, Logger
